Does Knowing Or Doing Make You An Expert?

One of the things a lot of people struggle with when writing about a topic is how they can justify offering information about a topic that they may not actively take part in themselves.

For example, if you've got a website about how to hit a longer golf drive but you either don't golf or aren't very good yourself, how can you ethically sell a product (or write articles, blog posts or any other content) about how to do it?

There are a couple of things to point out about this issue.

First, if you've studied the topic a bit and done your research before you started building a website, you probably know more about the topic than 80% of the people out there.

There are basically three types of people in any market:

  1. The rank newbie who is interested in the topic but knows next to nothing about it
  2. The majority of the market, who know something about it but are hobbyists and don't put a lot of time and effort into learning
  3. The rabid person who sleeps, eats, and breathes the topic

Unless you're one of the rabid fans yourself, it's going to be hard for you to offer those people much they don't already know. But you know what? That's okay - these people rarely make up more than 10% of the market, usually even less.

The other 90% are the ones you're interested in.

The second thing to keep in mind when you wonder about whether you should be writing about a topic is this:

There are a ton of "experts" in any market who make a good living writing or talking about the topic but don't actually "do it" themselves.

Howard Cosell is one of the most famous sportscasters of all time, but he was never a star player in any of those sports.

And how many movie critics have ever actually made a movie themselves, let alone a good one?

If you've done your homework, researched the market, and soaked up a fair bit of knowledge about it (and this doesn't mean you've spent years studying it - you can learn more about a topic than 80% of the market knows in a day or two) then you've got nothing to be concerned about.
