An Unexpected Side Effect Of Outsourcing

I finally decided it was time to outsource several procedures that I've been doing myself. They don't take THAT much time and I always told myself that it would take me as much time to verify someone else's work as it would to just do it myself.

But I finally reached the point where I was not doing other more important tasks that only I can do because of these mundane things.

So I outsourced it.

And in the process, I discovered something that I hadn't really considered before.

Having someone else doing the work for you means you need to be sure that the prep work is done for them. Otherwise you're paying someone to sit around because they can't do the work without the resources.

When I did these things myself, if I didn't get something done I would just procrastinate on it until it was important enough that it had to be done.

Take article submissions for example. When I was submitting my own articles, if I didn't have one written for one of the websites I was submitting for, I would leave it for the following week as often as I would take the time to write one.

There were always 10 other things on my to-do list that I considered to be more important. And they were more important - for me to do. But the articles still needed to be submitted, and putting them off only meant that site wasn't going to be as successful in the long run.

Now that I've outsourced article submissions, I'm a lot more conscious of what has to be done in order for the outsourcer to get their job done, and there's less temptation to just leave it for another day.

And that same thing applies to several other procedures.

If you're not outsourcing the mundane tasks that keep you from focusing on the stuff that's really important, you're eventually going to run into a brick wall where you can't keep up with it all.

Even if you start really small, take a percentage of whatever income you're making and start using it to pay for outsourcing. You'll soon see that more is getting done, you're able to focus on the really important stuff and (strangely enough) you're making more money.

Agree completely here…

You can't shovel coal and steer the ship.

I've been doing a lot of outsourcing for the same purpose, and I'm finding these truths are becoming more self evident lately…

1) You get what you pay for. There's a big difference between a $4 article, and a $50 article;
2) Systemise tasks so that you get a consistent output;
3) Similarly, the systems should ensure they receive a consistent quality of input to work with;
4) Create a management system. Management eats outsourcing time gains.

…And if you can find a way of cutting down the management and setup overhead for one-off tasks, please let me know!
